Orthopaedics and Musicians

Dr John White is an orthopaedic surgeon and a musician.

John has launched an Australian Musicians’ Clinic, a specialist service for the treatment of problems experienced by amateur, semi-professional and professional musicians. The Clinic, which specialises in hand and upper-limb injuries, offers a dedicated focus to musicians of all levels, but in particular professional musicians, who rely on their ability to perform to make a living.

John established the first NHS Musicians Hand and Upper Limb Clinic in London in 2011 which now continues under Dr. Mark Philips (www.musicianshandclinic.co.uk). Whilst in London, he was the Honorary surgeon to the Association of British Orchestras and the British Association of Performing Arts Medicine.

John has given many national and international presentations on musicians’ medical problems including at the Performing Arts Medicine Association annual conference (New York), the Australian Hand Therapy Association annual conference (Sydney), the Australian and New Zealand Orthopaedic Nurses Alliance and annual conference (Adelaide), and the International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand (Buenos Aires). He has been on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the Performing Arts Medicine Association (MPPA) since 2014.
